Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D.

Executive Chairman

Abraxis BioScience

 

Dr. Soon-Shiong is the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Abraxis Health. He was recently appointed Executive Director of the UCLA Wireless Health Institute, and is Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Professor of Bioengineering at UCLA.

Dr. Soon-Shiong holds a degree in Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and a Master of Science from the University of British Columbia. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.   Dr. Soon-Shiong performed the world’s first encapsulated islet transplant in a diabetic patient. He developed the first FDA approved protein nanoparticle delivery technology for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and this drug is being developed for lung, melanoma, gastric and pancreatic cancer. He is a co-inventor of over 50 issued U.S. patents, has published more than 100 scientific papers, and founder of 2 publicly traded pharmaceutical companies, American Pharma Partners and Abraxis Bioscience.

Dr. Soon-Shiong’s research has been recognized by national and international awards such as the Association for Academic Surgery Award for Research, the American College of Surgeons Schering Scholar, the Royal College Physicians and Surgeons Research Award, the Peter Kiewit Distinguished Membership in Medicine Award, and the International J.W. Hyatt Award for Service to Mankind.  Dr. Soon-Shiong received the 2006 Gilda Club Award for the advancement of cancer medicine and is a recipient of a 2007 Ellis Island Medal of Honor as well as the St. Mary Medical Center Life Achievement Award in 2007 and the St. John’s Health Center Caritas Award in 2007.

In 2008 he received the Medical Visionary Award from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for his work in pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Soon-Shiong currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Institute of Transplantation as well as the Technology Council for the new Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence at Northwestern University which is part of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) five-year initiative for nanotechnology in cancer research.  He also serves on two advisory boards for the RAND Corporation, the RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy and the RAND Health Board of Advisors.   Dr. Soon-Shiong recently joined the Board of Trustees for the Saint John’s Health Center in Los Angeles, California and the Advisory Board of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. He also recently joined the Advisory Board for the Institute for Technology Advancement (ITA) at UCLA School of Engineering & Applied Science, as well as the Board of Councilors of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

In 2009 he was appointed to the President’s Council at RAND Corporation, Chairman of the Steering Committee of Life Sciences of the X-Prize Foundation and Founding Board member to Dossia Foundation.

Bruce Wendel

Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Abraxis BioScience

 

Mr. Wendel has been with Abraxis BioScience since May 2006 and served as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development until being appointed to Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in January 2010. Previously, he joined American Pharmaceutical Partners (APP) in 2004 as Vice President of Corporate Development. He began his 14 years with Bristol-Myers Squibb as in-house counsel before shifting to business and corporate development. While at Bristol-Myers Squibb, as Vice President, Corporate Development International Medicines, he led teams that completed several major acquisitions, divestitures and alliances around the world. These transactions included the divestiture of Bristol's U.S. diagnostic division as well as the acquisition of three pharmaceutical firms in Argentina, South Korea, and Peru, and a co-promotion alliance with SmithKline Beecham for Avandia®. Before joining APP, he served as Vice President, Business Development and Licensing for IVAX Corporation, a generic drug manufacturer, where he completed the company's acquisition of 3M's European respiratory business. Previously, Mr. Wendel served in the legal departments of Playtex and Combe. He earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Georgetown University Law School where he was an editor of Law & Policy in International Business, and a B.S. from Cornell University.

Mitchell Fogelman
Senior Vice President Finance
 

Mr. Fogelman joined Abraxis BioScience in 2009. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President of Finance, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of CytRx Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed biopharmaceutical research and development company, from September 2007 to December 2008. From 1982 to 2007, Mr. Fogelman worked at International Aluminum Corporation, a NYSE-listed manufacturer of commercial and residential building products, last serving as Senior Vice President-Finance, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary from June 2000 to August 2007. Mr. Fogelman is a CPA who worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP from 1975 to 1982. He earned his M.B.A. in finance and quantitative analysis from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his B.A. degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Kirk K. Calhoun
CPA, Retired , Ernst & Young, LLP Partner

Mr. Calhoun has served as a director since 2002. He joined Ernst & Young LLP in 1965 and served as a partner of the firm from 1975 until his retirement in June 2002 where his responsibilities included both area management and serving clients in a variety of industries. Mr. Calhoun is a certified public accountant with a background in auditing and accounting. Mr. Calhoun serves on the board of governors of the California State University Foundation, serving as chairman from July 2000 to June 2003, and is a director of Myogen, Inc. Mr. Calhoun holds a B.S. in accounting from the University of Southern California.

David S. Chen, Ph.D.
Cypac Investment Management

Dr. Chen has served as a director since June 1998. Dr. Chen was chairman of Cypac Investment Management Limited from 1998-2003. He served as chief executive officer of Central Investment Holdings Company from July 1996 to February 2000, and CFO from May 1991 to February 1994. Dr. Chen holds a B.S. in agricultural economics from National Taiwan University, a M.B.A. from California State University at Long Beach and a Ph.D. in business administration from Nova University, Florida.

Stephen D. Nimer, M.D.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Nimer has served as director since May 2001. Dr. Nimer has been associated with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since 1993 and has been head of the division of hematologic oncology since 1996 and chief of hematology service since 1993. He has also taught medicine at the Cornell University School of Medicine since 1993. Dr. Nimer holds a M.D. from the University of Chicago and a B.S. in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Leonard Shapiro
Shapco, Inc.

Mr. Shapiro has served as a director since October 2002. He has more than 50 years of business experience as an entrepreneur and founder of Shapco, Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of pipe products, where he has been the chief executive officer since 1948. As chief executive officer of Shapco, he presided over the firm's real estate investment activities in addition to its manufacturing and distribution operations. Shapco, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, employs over 300 employees in various locations throughout the western United States.

Michael S. Sitrick
Sitrick Brincko, LLC

Michael S. Sitrick is the chairman and chief executive officer of Sitrick Brincko LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Resources Connection, Inc. Sitrick Brincko is a strategic communications, corporate advisory and restructuring firm and is also the successor firm to Sitrick And Company, one of the nation's leading strategic public relations firms. Prior to forming Sitrick and Company in 1989, Mr. Sitrick served as senior vice president-communications for Wickes Companies, Inc. and a member of that company’s senior management group from 1981 to 1989. Before joining Wickes, Mr. Sitrick headed corporate communications and advertising for National Can Corporation, was a Group Supervisor for a Chicago public relations firm and served as an assistant director of public information in the Richard J. Daley administration in Chicago. Mr. Sitrick previously served as a director of old Abraxis BioScience from August 2006 until November 2007 when that company was separated into two independent public companies-the current Abraxis BioScience and APP Pharmaceuticals, Inc.-and as a director of APP Pharmaceuticals from November 2007 until September 2008 when that company was sold to Fresenius SE. He holds a B.S. degree in business administration and journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.
